Ranching or Open Space?

August 29, 2005 was “the last roundup” on Stanford University land. Cattle are out, and if you want an inexpensive place to pasture your horse, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

An article in the San Jose Mercury News said:

It’s the expense, and all the new rules, that told Roger Piers it was time to go.

The Piers family has leased the land for grazing since 1927.

“They say: `You can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ And they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about,” he said.

The article states that although the Stanford Management Corp. said it would welcome proposals from other ranchers, environmentalists with the Stanford Open Space Alliance oppose most grazing, saying it could harm the endangered red-legged frog.

It’s interesting that the frogs and livestock have managed to coexist this long.
